How to Install a Side Stand Sensor Bypass / Dummy Sensor
Modern BS6 motorcycles feature a side stand engine cut-off sensor. While this is a great safety feature, these sensors are located near the ground where they are constantly exposed to water, mud, and dust. When the sensor fails, the ECU thinks the stand is down and cuts off the engine spark, leaving you stranded. Carrying a Side Stand Dummy Sensor is the ultimate recovery hack.
How the Side Stand Sensor Works
The sensor is a magnetic switch. When the stand is up, the switch completes a circuit, signaling the ECU that it is safe to start the engine. When the sensor fails or gets filled with mud, it breaks this circuit permanently.
Installing a Dummy Sensor (Step-by-Step)
- Locate the side stand sensor wiring harness coupler (usually behind the left engine sprocket cover or main frame rail).
- Unplug the faulty side stand sensor coupler.
- Plug the Side Stand Dummy Sensor (Bypass Plug) into the main wiring harness side of the coupler.
- The dummy sensor acts as a jumper, sending a constant “Stand Up” signal to the ECU.
- Turn on the ignition and start your bike to ride safely to a service station!
