Step-by-Step Guide to Using an OBD Scanner on Motorcycles
Modern BS6 motorcycles are packed with electronic sensors. When a sensor fails, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) triggers the check engine light (MIL) on your dashboard. Instead of guessing which sensor is broken, professional mechanics use an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) scanner. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to scan any BS6 bike.
Step 1: Choose the Correct Adapter Cable
Unlike cars, which use a universal 16-pin OBD2 port, motorcycle manufacturers use different diagnostic connectors. For example:
- Honda uses a 4-pin or 6-pin connector.
- TVS uses a 6-pin connector.
- Royal Enfield uses a 6-pin Euro 5 type connector.
- Bajaj and KTM use different 6-pin configurations.
Pick the correct adapter cable from your diagnostic kit (such as the T300 kit) and plug it into the scanner’s main cable.
Step 2: Locate the Bike’s Diagnostic Port
The diagnostic port is usually hidden under the rider’s seat, behind one of the plastic side panels, or near the battery box. It is often covered by a protective rubber cap. Remove this cap and plug in your scanner’s adapter cable.
Step 3: Turn on the Ignition and Run the Scan
- Turn the motorcycle ignition key to the “ON” position (do not crank the engine).
- Your scanner screen will light up, drawing power directly from the bike’s battery.
- Select the bike brand from the menu, navigate to “Diagnostic Codes”, and click “Read Codes”.
- The scanner will display a code (e.g., P0107 for a bad MAP sensor). Note down the code, repair the faulty wiring or replace the sensor, and then select “Clear Codes” to reset the check engine light.
