Why is My BS6 Bike Engine Warning Light On? Common Causes & Fixes
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), commonly known as the check engine light, on your dashboard is your bike’s ECU warning you of a system malfunction. On BS6 bikes, this light should never be ignored. Let’s look at the most common reasons why this warning light turns on.
Cause 1: Loose or Dirty O2 Sensor
The O2 sensor measures exhaust gases. If it gets dirty due to carbon buildup or carbon-rich fuel, it fails to send accurate signals, triggering the engine light. Clean the sensor connector or replace it to clear the fault.
Cause 2: Bad Fuel Pressure
BS6 fuel injection systems require constant fuel pressure. If your fuel tank runs dry or if the fuel pump filter gets clogged, the system detects low fuel pressure and turns on the MIL.
Cause 3: Coupler Corrosion
Water entering wiring harness connectors during a pressure wash can cause minor electrical shorts or high resistance, triggering sensor warning codes.
How to Fix: Connect an OBD scanner to read the exact fault code stored in the ECU, repair the sensor or connector, and use the scanner to clear the code and turn the light off.
