How to Adjust Motorcycle Idling (RPM) on Suzuki, Yamaha, and Bajaj BS6 Bikes
On older carbureted motorcycles, adjusting the idle speed (RPM) was as simple as turning a small screw on the side of the carburetor. However, on BS6 fuel-injected bikes, the idle speed is controlled electronically by the ECU via an Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). If your bike is stalling at traffic lights or idling too high, you need an RPM Adjuster Tool. Here is how to adjust it.
Why BS6 Bikes Stall at Idle
Carbon deposits can block the small bypass air passages inside the throttle body, causing the idle engine speed to drop below the recommended 1,400 RPM, leading to frequent stalling.
Using the RPM Adjuster Tool
- Locate the throttle body assembly behind the air filter box.
- Find the idle air adjustment screw (often made of plastic or recessed metal).
- Insert the RPM Adjuster Tool into the screw slot.
- Turn the screw clockwise to decrease the idle RPM, or counter-clockwise to increase the idle air intake and raise the RPM.
- Aim for a stable idle speed between 1,350 to 1,450 RPM when the engine is warm.
