How to Diagnose a Bad CKP Sensor on Honda & TVS Bikes

The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor tells the ECU the exact position and rotational speed of the engine crankshaft. If the ECU doesn’t receive a signal from the CKP sensor, it will not fire the spark plug or pulse the fuel injector, resulting in a dead engine. Here is how to test a CKP sensor using a diagnostic tester.


Symptoms of a Bad CKP Sensor

  • No spark at the spark plug.
  • Fuel pump runs, but the injector does not spray fuel.
  • Engine cuts off suddenly when it gets hot and starts again after cooling down.

Testing the CKP Sensor

  1. Locate the stator coil wiring harness coming out of the engine block.
  2. Unplug the CKP sensor coupler.
  3. Connect a CKP Sensor Tester to the sensor pins.
  4. Rotate the engine slowly using the kickstarter or by turning the rear wheel in gear.
  5. Interpretation: If the LED indicator on the tester flashes as the engine rotates, the CKP sensor is healthy. If the LED remains off, the magnetic pickup coil inside the engine cover is faulty and needs replacement.
