If your bike’s digital console suddenly goes blank, or if your horn and indicators stop working, you likely have a blown fuse. Fuses are designed to act as safety barriers, melting to break the circuit when too much electric current flows. Here is how to troubleshoot a blown fuse and locate electrical short circuits.
Step 1: Locate the Fuse Box
Most motorcycles have a primary fuse box located under the seat or behind one of the side panels. Open the plastic lid; inside you will find small, colored blade fuses (usually labeled 10A, 15A, or 20A) along with a few spare fuses.
Step 2: Identify the Blown Fuse
Pull each fuse out using a fuse puller tool. Hold the fuse up to the light. If the metal strip inside the clear plastic housing is broken or has a black burn mark, the fuse is blown.
Step 3: Diagnose the Short Circuit
Never simply replace a blown fuse and ride off. If there is a short circuit, the new fuse will blow immediately.
- Use a multimeter set to Continuity Mode (Beep setting).
- Connect one probe to the load terminal of the fuse socket and the other to the bike’s metal frame (ground).
- If the multimeter beeps, it means a live wire is touching the frame, causing a short circuit. Trace the wiring harness along the frame to find any pinched or bare copper wires.
